Bandra Railway Land Demolition Enters Third Day Amid Violence, Heavy Security, and Large-Scale Clearance Drive
A demolition drive in Bandra, Mumbai, has entered its third day, clearing nearly 80% of illegal encroachments on 1.31 acres of railway land. The operation, led by railway authorities with police support, has seen tensions, clashes, injuries, and a FIR registered as remaining structures undergo cautious removal under court orders.
The operation is being jointly conducted by railway authorities in coordination with local police forces and civic agencies. The situation turned tense after incidents of stone pelting were reported on the second day of the demolition drive, prompting heightened security measures across the area. Heavy deployment of police personnel continues to ensure law and order and facilitate the uninterrupted progress of the clearance operation.
Officials confirmed that bulldozers and heavy machinery are actively engaged in removing debris, while remaining structures are being assessed with caution before further demolition. Authorities also stated that around twenty percent of structures are still standing, particularly those linked to buildings currently under legal protection, and are being handled carefully to avoid collateral damage.
During the course of the operation, several religious structures, including a madrasa, were demolished as part of identified illegal encroachments. This development escalated tensions in the area, triggering clashes between residents and police forces. Law enforcement authorities were compelled to deploy crowd control measures after objects were allegedly thrown at officials, further intensifying the confrontation. Multiple individuals, including security personnel and civilians, sustained injuries in the incident.
A formal First Information Report has been registered at Nirmal Nagar Police Station against individuals accused of involvement in violence and obstruction of government work. Authorities emphasized that the demolition drive is being executed under court orders and in coordination with multiple agencies, including railway protection forces and municipal bodies. Officials have stated that the remaining encroachments are expected to be cleared in the coming days as part of the scheduled multi-day operation. The situation remains under close surveillance as the clearance drive continues under strict security arrangements.
The ongoing demolition underscores the intensified enforcement action against unauthorized occupation of public railway land, highlighting both legal enforcement and ground-level tensions in one of Mumbai’s densely populated suburban corridors.
